Facing the end of a marriage can be deeply emotional and even frightening. You’ve built a life with another person, and now the future seems incredibly uncertain.
When you’re facing the uncertainty of divorce and looking for a thoughtful, compassionate path forward, who can you trust to guide you?
I’m attorney Andre Batson, and since 2002, I’ve helped families just like yours get through divorce with grace, strength, and a firm legal voice in their corner. Your rights, future, and access to your children all matter, and I’ll step up to make sure your concerns are heard.
You focus on taking care of your children and your well-being, and the Law Office of Andre L. Batson will ensure you get the best outcome possible in your divorce, custody, or child support case.
When trying to determine which option would be best, some clients are more concerned overall with cost. Mediation allows for negotiations and discussions between separating spouses, with their attorneys present. The process can be far less expensive and faster than a divorce trial.
But in high-conflict divorces or cases where trust between spouses has been damaged, a trial may be your best option toward protecting your children and your assets. While more expensive, a trial can allow a judge to consider evidence and hand down a ruling on asset division and child custody. A child custody lawyer can help you navigate divorce court and make sure your perspective as a parent is heard.

A: Washington, D.C. only permits “no-fault divorce”, allowing people to legally end a marriage due to irreconcilable differences. While infidelity may well play a role in your decision to end your marriage, it is not recognized as a separate or unique ground for divorce.
A: Yes. After a divorce, it is important to update your estate planning documents, including your will. If you do not update these documents, your ex-spouse could wind up inheriting your assets should you pass away before them. Estate plans should also be updated if you remarry or have children with your second spouse. An estate planning and probate lawyer can help you make these needed adjustments.
A: Child support is calculated based on each parent’s income, the number of children, and the costs of child care and children’s medical care. A child support attorney can help you better understand the law, and the support you qualify for.
Child custody is determined by evaluating the best interests of your child. The stability of each parent’s home, your ability to care for your child, your child’s educational needs, and your child’s social and emotional needs will all play a role.
A: Generally, if your child spends most of their time living with you, even if you do not have sole physical custody, you have a right to receive child support from the other parent. If physical custody is shared, you might still be entitled to child support if the other parent earns considerably more than you.
Do you need help with your divorce, child custody issue, or child support petition? I've helped countless families across Washington, D.C. and Maryland move through divorce with the support and advocacy needed to start over on a brighter note.
